3 Titles for your fall TBR!
Here are some books you should definitely pick up for Fall 2018!
“We have nothing but we have God. We have nothing but we have each other.”She Would Be King, Wayétu Moore
She Would Be King is the magical retelling of Liberia’s origins. Told through three distinct characters who, depending on perspective, are either gifted or cursed with a strength that ensures their survival in the midst of a chaotic storm of fate’s turning point. This is such a gem of a novel. Wayétu Moore’s voice sings in the storyscape as if it’s been here long before.
“Scars are proof of survival.”Praise Song for the Butterflies, Bernice L. McFadden
Praise Song for the Butterflies by Bernice L. McFadden is the harrowing tale of a young girl’s plight as a trokosi in the hinterlands of Ghana. This is a story I had no awareness of prior to reading it, so after reading it I found myself going down a rabbit hole of documentaries to find out more. It’s a quick read, but it packs a lasting punch.
“Because we live in time, when we visit the land of the dead, we must carry our own time with us, or experience literally nothing and never even know we were ever there.”Riddance, Shelley Jackson
Riddance by Shelley Jackson is unlike anything I’ve ever read before. I’m not a horror fiction reader, but if this book is any indication of what the genre has to offer, count me in! This is the story of the Sybil Joines Vocational School for Ghost Speakers & Hearing Mouth Children where students with speech impediments are trained in how to be the vessels for the dead to communicate through. This book is a meditation on time & space, life & death, absence & presence, and it’s one of my top reads of the year.
